About Young Adult Missionaries

Young Adult Missionaries (YAMs)

There are currently two missionary programs available to young adults through The General Board of Global Ministries, which is the mission agency of The United Methodist Church. They are the Mission Intern Program and the US-2 Program.

Mission interns are young adults ages 20-30 who engage in a three-year program of leadership development, divided between an international assignment and an assignment in the intern's home country, based on the understanding that work for social justice is fundamental to the living out of their faith. The program encourages young adults to learn from communities of faith and to connect that understanding to a community in the intern's home context. Participants work as grassroots organizers and/or advocates in areas of conflict resolution, peace with justice education, environmental preservation, economic development, indigenous rights, women's and children's issues, and more.

US-2 missionaries are young adults ages 20-30 who serve for two years as part of this social justice and leadership development program, and are assigned to diverse ministries at faith-based agencies and community organizations throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The program encourages young adults to deepen their faith while examining their role in church and society in an opportunity to live with and learn from communities of strength while struggling with hunger, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, illiteracy, children at risk, substance abuse, racism, domestic violence, and inadequate health care.
